Top 10 affordable new EVs in 2025

In researching this blog post, and several previous ones, it has always been easy to discover exciting new EV models coming on the market soon. However, there is often one small problem.

My people don’t live in Monaco. My entourage flies economy. My crew sits somewhere towards the back at concerts and sports events. The last super yacht I travelled on was a car ferry to Fishguard.

This is for people who want to make the switch to electric, at the right price. Here are the top 10 ways to make the electric switch in 2025.

1. Citroen e-C3
Starting Price: £21,990
Range: 160 miles
Battery Size: 44 kWh
Price per Range: £137.44/mile
Why it’s great: This car is probably the best value EV in the market right now. It has a similar range to the e-C4 but is a bit smaller and much better priced. The max charge speed is excellent at 100 kW which means you can fully recharge the battery on a rapid charger in the time it takes to drink a coffee. The e-C3 is like a reliable friend, who shows up to dinner on time with a smile, a bottle of wine and some cheese. Affordable, dependable, Formidable!

2. Fiat Grande Panda
Starting Price: £22,000
Range: 160 miles
Battery Size: 43 kWh
Price per Range: £137.50/mile
Why it’s great: The specs and price tag match the Citreon e-C3, but with Italian style. Like the e-C3 it has a medium-sized battery and a reasonable range. The max charge rate that will get your battery back up to full in less than 30 mins, so you can take this car pretty much anywhere. Just don’t get it in Mustard-yellow like they did in the promo pic.

3. Renault 5 E-Tech 40kWh 120hp
Starting Price: £22,995
Range: 155 miles
Battery Size: 40 kWh
Price per Range: £148.35/mile
Why it’s great: Renault have good pedigree in the EV world with their Zoe model. The 5 E-Tech is a smaller car, and a revival of an old classic (think of the electric versions of the Mini Cooper or Fiat 500). It is like the croissant of EVs – does the same job as the thing its replacing, and yet it feels more stylish and sophisticated.

4. MG MG4 Electric 51 kWh
Starting Price: £26,995
Range: 180 miles
Battery Size: 51 kWh
Price per Range: £149.97/mile
Why it’s great: I have long thought MG is the over-achiever in the EV classroom. Indeed MG had 4 models in the Top 10 best value list for 2024. The MG4 has a big battery at 51kWh, which translates into 180 miles of driving – one of the best ranges for an economy EV. And it’s still affordable. MG will remain top of the class in 2025.

5. Hyundai INSTER Standard Range
Starting Price: £23,495
Range: 155 miles
Battery Size: 39 kWh
Price per Range: £151.58/mile
Why it’s great: Hyundai makes dependable workhorses. Not beautiful, but reliable, efficient and good value for money. It’s one of the reasons why taxi app drivers are favouring electric vehicles by Hyundai (and sister-brand Kia), particularly now in cities with congestion charges. The Hyundai INSTER may well be the car equivalent of the tortoise in the tortoise and the hare race.

6. Opel Frontera 44 kWh
Starting Price: £23,495
Range: 155 miles
Battery Size: 44 kWh
Price per Range: £151.58/mile
Why it’s great: The Open Frontera is Opel’s second foray into the world of EVs after the Corsa-E. They are targeting the mini-SUV market, whilst trying to keep the price down. They may have sacrificed some range to hit the price targets. More suited to urban driving than long country roads.

7. BYD DOLPHIN 44.9 kWh Active
Starting Price: £26,195
Range: 160 miles
Battery Size: 45 kWh
Price per Range: £163.72/mile
Why it’s great: China now sells more EVs and PHEVs than petrol cars in the domestic market. And now China’s top EV brands are coming to a dealership near you. Great for competition. Not great if you are an incumbent car manufacturer that has been sitting on your heated-backside. The BYD Dolphin is one of the best-priced EVs in the market. Look out for more low price EVs from BYD in the near future.

8. Mini Cooper E
Starting Price: £30,000
Range: 155 miles
Battery Size: 37 kWh
Price per Range: £193.55/mile
Why it’s great: It’s a Mini. It’s electric. Plus it’s a Mini. Everyone should try a mini. They are fun, stylish, made by BMW (all that engineering without telling the world you are a BMW driver), and now they are eco-friendly. What’s not to love?

9. Citroen e-C4
Starting Price: £35,000
Range: 180 miles
Battery Size: 46 kWh
Price per Range: £194.44/mile
Why it’s great: This is a good looking car with decent range. The big brother of the e-C3 with more space. Not strictly on sale in the UK yet. But it’s coming soon and I needed to find a 10th EV to round the list off.

10. GWM ORA 03 48 kWh
Starting Price: £31,995
Range: 160 miles
Battery Size: 45 kWh
Price per Range: £199.97/mile
Why it’s great: This car has lots of fun tech to help you navigate, park, reverse and play your tunes. It’s like a supermarket own brand version of a Tesla 3.

P.S. GMW, we need to talk about how you name cars. Their previous offering was called a ‘Funky Cat’. GMW ORA 03 48 kWh looks like something you’d see written at the bottom of a bar code. Come to me next time. I have ideas. Maybe then I can live in Monaco.
