The Best and Worst EV Tariffs in the UK. Sept 2024 edition

Welcome, readers, to a showdown of the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) tariffs! Today, we’re plugging into the best and worst deals out there, so you don’t have to.

The Best: Octopus Energy’s Intelligent Octopus Go

First up, is the reigning champ of EV tariffs, Octopus Energy’s Octopus Go. This tariff is like the Tesla model 3 of energy plans—sleek and surprisingly affordable. With off-peak rates at 8.50 p/kWh, it’s almost like they’re paying you to charge. Full disclosure: I have this tariff and set my white goods to run from 12:30am. I recommend you do too.

Pros:

  • Off-Peak Hours: 00:30 – 05:30am. Perfect for nerds who like to set timers.
  • Off-Peak Rate: 8.50 p/kWh. Cheaper than a packet of crips*
  • Peak Rate: 26.7 p/kWh. Could be worse!

Cons:

  • Standing Charge: 55.00 p/day. Ouch – but this isn’t set by Octopus.

The Worst: Scottish Power’s EV Optimise

Now, let’s talk about the EV tariff equivalent of a flat tire—Scottish Power’s EV Optimise. This plan is like that one friend who always shows up late and eats all your snacks. With an off-peak rate of 10.00 p/kWh, it’s not the worst, but it’s not winning any awards.

Pros:

  • Off-Peak Hours: Anytime. Flexibility is nice, but at what cost?
  • Standing Charge: 54.00 p/day. Meh.

Cons:

  • Eligibility: to get the tariff, you need a single rate smart meter, a compatible EV or charger, the ScottishPower app, size 10 running shoes, a dog called Fred, etc.
  • Off-Peak Rate: 10.00 p/kWh. The worst offpeak rate.
  • Peak Rate: 29.00 p/kWh. Meh.

The Middle Ground: EDF’s GoElectric

For those who like to play it safe, EDF’s GoElectric is the middle child of EV tariffs. It’s not the best, but it’s not the worst. It keeps it head down and tries not to cause trouble.

Pros:

  • Off-Peak Hours: 00:00 – 05:00. A joe-average window for charging.
  • Off-Peak Rate: 9.00 p/kWh. Not bad, not great.

Cons:

  • Standing Charge: 56.00 p/day. High.
  • Peak Rate: 29.50 p/kWh. Could be better.

Conclusion

Whether you’re looking for the best bang for your buck or just trying to avoid the worst of the worst, there’s an EV tariff out there for you. Just remember, when it comes to charging your EV, timing is everything. Set those timers, avoid peak hours, and always be charging!
